Showcasing our Year 5 musical talent

Students in Year 5 have taken lessons on new instruments during Term 2. This week they presented and performed on their instruments, which we captured on video. See students' original trumpet composition; students playing the clarinet; our wonderful flutists; our recorder showcase; and our rhythmic student trombonists. Next term, students will swap to learning a new wind instrument. This program is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of playing a wind instrument.

Insights: Building and acting on empathy

Dear Community,

“If these students represent the future, then we have nothing to worry about.” These were David Opat’s closing words at the recent Year 3 Term 2 assembly.

The theme for the assembly was inclusivity and the students shared with us how they had been studying this topic this term. They had a strong emphasis on understanding difference and they focused on learning about physical disability as a way to appreciate that accommodations can be made to make space for everyone. They conducted an all-abilities audit of our play spaces to see how they might be made more accessible to those with various disabilities. The students sang “It’s a Wonderful World” to us while signing in Auslan and demonstrated how they had learnt to introduce themselves, sign their names and have a basic conversation in Auslan.

Learning about feelings in Junior Kinder

We were so lucky to have Dione Brint (Zoe's mum and a Psychologist) to facilitate a feelings workshop for the children this week. Dione started the sessions by explaining to the children that it is her job to help people with their thoughts and feelings. She asked the children where their thoughts come from? Ceci answered "From your brain". She then asked where your feelings come from? Stella answered "From your heart". Dione then explained to the children that at times you may also feel your thoughts in other parts of your body such as your tummy like when you worry about something.

Next we played "Feelings Simon Says". For example, If you are feeling sad, make a sad face, a happy face, an angry face as well as an angry body. The children really connected with this and were seen standing their feet and crossing their arms

Year Levels: K

A bittersweet Shabbaton

Facilitated by Tzevet Lev (Jewish Life team), a Year 12 Shabbaton was held at Queenscliffe last weekend, with the aim of the camp for students to experience a meaningful Shabbat together and reflect on their time at school. Students explored their connection with the Jewish community and their Jewish identities and discussed what they want this to look like after school.

This was a bittersweet experience as this will be the last time the cohort experiences time away together on a KDS camp.

The year 12 Shabbaton was the bittersweet summation to the 5 wonderful KDS camps I have attended. Unlike the others, which taught me how to cook rice on a trangia or challenged my canooing or surfing abilities, this camp was unique - it taught me about myself and my relationships with others. I will never forget the unity and friendship bolstered from singing around the campfire, or the tears and attachments

Ending the Term on a celebratory note

The Senior School celebrated the end of Term 2 with a lively assembly showcasing our musical talent, sporting achievements, and our Kinor David badge recipients.

VCE music students Raphy Light and Sienna Burrows performed, as well as the Senior String Ensemble, the Nana band, and the Senior School choir.

Film fun funds for Children's Ground

Yesterday, the Year 5 Tzedakah (Charity) Committee ran a Movie Night Fundraiser, raising money for the charity they chose, Children's Ground. This First Nations-led organisation provides education and community support, making lasting change for First Nations children and their families.

Students in Year 5 (and their families) generously baked yummy items to sell before the films. As well as eating delicious food, students wore their pyjamas to get the full movie night experience. Kol haKavod to our Year 5 leaders for a wonderful evening!

Abuzz at the Drone Fair

Last Friday a group of Year 6, 7 and 8 students attended the inaugural Drone Fair at RMIT City Campus facilitated by She Maps, the industry leaders in Drone Education. The students learnt how drones are being used with software applications in a variety of ways including: analysing Great Barrier Reef bleaching events, counting Koala populations using thermal imaging, and drone delivery of vital medicines, such as immunisations to remote locations. Our instructor Katie also challenged our societal "unconscious bias" that has led to smaller numbers of female students following technological career pathways and she encouraged all students to be open to the possibilities of future drone careers. Working in small teams and rotating through the roles of pilot, co-pilot and reporter, our students learnt how to safely set-up and manually pilot their drones through many skill-based challenges. Incredible EISM sports results!

Term 2 of EISM sport was completed this week with some incredible results. Our volleyball teams continued to improve after every game with the boys finishing off the season in style with their first win in the final match against Huntingtower. The girls' volleyball team were competitive in each and every match, narrowly losing their final game and finishing the season in 6th position.

Our boys' soccer team had a wonderful season on the pitch without losing a game. They finished in 2nd position with only one draw separating them from first place. Well done boys!

Championship glory returned to KDS once again in the form of Soccer. The girls' soccer team completed their undefeated run in term 2 by demolishing Huntingtower in the final game finishing the season with 5 wins & 1 draw finishing on top of the ladder and taking out the EISM Championship. Well done girls!

Aruchat Boker Tov in Prep

What a busy and exciting term we have had in Prep! We learnt about fruit, vegetables and, for the last few weeks, our topic was breakfast. We learnt the Hebrew name and colour of each fruit and vegetable and the food and drink we would have for breakfast. We also created a memory and lotto game to play with our friends and family. This week, we enjoyed having a big breakfast here at school. That was extra yummy!!

On Wednesday KDS students faced Yavneh in the annual King David vs Yavneh senior football match.

It was a spirited game with our students showing resilience and excellent comradery.

Year 2 reduce, reuse and dig

The Year 2 students have been learning about sustainability through an exploration into how we can sustain our environment by reducing, reusing and recycling, how long things take to decompose, and the actions we can take to reduce our environmental footprint. Students undertook an experiment where they buried rubbish and made predictions as to how long the various items would take to decompose. We then dug up the rubbish and compared our observations to our predictions. The unit culminated in students making buildings using various recycled materials and including a range of sustainable features in their building, such as solar panels, compost bins, water tanks and gardens.

Justin Art House Museum Exhibition

Friends of KDS is a group of friends and grandparents with a particular interest in building friendship and support for The King David School’s arts programs. Throughout the year, we organise a dynamic program of social events. Our next event is the tour and discussion of ‘Art and Gender’ at the Justin Art House Museum (see below for details and a link to register for the event). Other major events are scheduled for 9 October, with a unique personalised tour of the artist Deborah Halpern’s studio in Warrandyte, and 20 November: A King’s Night to Remember with dinner and entertainment at Kooyong Tennis Club.
Everyone is welcome at our events, which are advertised in both the Harp and on the KDS website.
