Insights - B’hatzlacha to Class of 2018

Insights - B’hatzlacha to Class of 2018

Dear Community,

That special ingredient that turns a group of similarly-aged students into a cohort, a collection of individuals into a community and a school into a second home was on display at our recent Yr 12 Celebration Day Assembly.

Our students marked the end of their formal classes as they move into their study period leading into their final exams. The assembly was characterised by their irreverence and displayed their wit, sense of humour and unique dancing skills. However, the real power of the occasion was demonstrated in their emotional tributes to the School, their profound gratitude to their teachers and their unequivocal love and support for their peers.

The staff and students could not help but be overcome as the students transitioned between laughter and tears, shared funny and moving anecdotes and personal reflections on why their school experience meant so much to them.

Just as moving were the profound words and sentiments represented by their educators

Junior Kinder Grandparents' Shabbat

Junior Kinder Grandparents' Shabbat

Our Junior Kinder children were bursting with excitement today as grandparents and special friends joined them to celebrate Shabbat. They showcased their impressive knowledge of the rituals and songs they learn each week in preparation for Shabbat. As Marc Light commented, at King David, we "teach Jewish in an experiential way" so that students gain a rich appreciation of our culture and traditions.

Gan Te'ena were fortunate to have Rabbi Shneur Reti-Waks (Osher's Dad) to lead some of the brachot.

Kol Hakavod to the children and educators on a special and memorable morning.

Bright Sparks! Science enrichment - Australian National Chemistry Quiz (ANCQ)

Bright Sparks! Science enrichment - Australian National Chemistry Quiz (ANCQ)

The ANCQ is a unique chemical education activity for Years 7 to 12 students. It provides a major focus for students on the relevance of chemistry in an exciting and stimulating way. It aims to promote interest in chemistry and the role of chemists in our society. While some questions relied on knowledge and understanding covered as part of studying the Victorian Curriculum, the quiz focused on chemical thinking. Any questions that went beyond what was covered in syllabus documents could be answered by students applying their knowledge and understanding the stimulus material provided in the questions.

All students who participated in this test received a certificate of participation. The following students were recognised for their achievements in placing in the top 1% to 25% of the state of Victoria.

High Distinction (with Excellence) - Ariel Epstein (Year 8)
High Distinction - Nathan Greenwell (Year 7)

Year 5 camp

Year 5 camp

Year 5 students spent this week on camp, staying at Grantville Lodge near Philip Island.

They visited Koala Sanctuary, where up to 10 koalas were spotted. One of the keen campers even spotted a shy copperhead snake, far below the observation deck. Students had lunch at beautiful Churchill Island where Stella's birthday was celebrated with yummy cookies. Farm life was explored including milking cows, whip cracking and sheep shearing.

Challenges including high ropes, raft building and bushwalking were also incorporated.

Our Place in Space

Our Place in Space

Year 7TS Science students were given the task to design a ten minute oral presentation aimed to teach Year 5 students about an aspect of the topic “Our place in Space”. The class used various methods to make their presentations as part of a Science Expo including kahoot quizzes, PowerPoint presentations, models and games. The class would like to acknowledge the other two Year 7 classes for allowing their wonderful models to be on display for the program.

Presentations on black holes, the earth’s seasons, space technology, solar and lunar eclipses, planets and their orbits, galactic collisions and the moon’s phases were the primary focus.

Reine Polevoy Geller and his group covered the theory related to why the earth has seasons.
“Earth’s seasons are the centre of our schedules, plans, daily routines, and lives, determining the weather, the produce and plants available at the time, and the amount of daylight we receive. This phenomenon of nature, is the result of the E

Future Cities Exhibition

Future Cities Exhibition

Throughout term 3 of Year 7 Humanities, students worked very hard tackling the difficult problem of how the cities of the future will be designed to sustainably manage the needs of rapidly increasing urban populations.

Today, 54 per cent of the world’s population lives in urban areas; a proportion that is expected to increase to 66 per cent by 2050. That equates to an addition of 2.5 billion people to urban populations by 2050. As a result, cities will face numerous challenges in meeting the needs of their growing urban populations in ways that don't harm the environment, including for housing, infrastructure, transportation and energy.

In small groups, students imagined, researched, designed and built sustainable cities of the future. At the Future Cities Exhibition last Friday, the Year 7's showcased some of their brilliant ideas such as vertical forests, off-shore wind farms, urban hyperloops and vegetated biospheres. The future is in good hands!

Father-Son bonding weekend

Father-Son bonding weekend

This past weekend, the boys of Year 3 and their fathers headed to Silverwater Resort in San Remo for a father / son weekend.

Highlights included swimming and scooting around the resort and exploring the picturesque coastline. The weather on Saturday morning did not look promising – a good time to use the indoor pool. After several hours of rain, the sun came out and the fun began. Saturday afternoon saw a walk on the pier, a few close encounters with seagulls and the chance to sit on a police motorbike.

The Dads and kids then went for pizza dinner at Cowes on Phillip Island followed by gelato. At this point, all the boys went to bed and slept well – and that’s the story we are sticking with. On Sunday morning, some dads made breakfast whilst the kids burnt off some energy on the giant jumping pillow. A beach walk and beach visit gave the boys an opportunity to ensure that there were absolutely no clean or dry clothes left for the drive home. Eleven wet, sand

VCE History Tea Party

VCE History Tea Party

The traditional end of history classes' Tea Party was held last week for the VCE Revolutions Class of 2018. Everyone made the effort to dress as a member of the revolutionary societies of America or Russia to recall the 'Boston Tea Party', with the aid of a small samovar. Most enjoyed English Breakfast Tea or Russian Caravan Tea, tea biscuits and lollies in the shape of a (Russian) bear or snake (as in Benjamin Franklin's 'Join or Die' cartoon). The class divided into two teams and battled valiantly to answer some quite difficult quiz questions on the American Revolution. The outcome was a draw but not after some spirited discussion and debate over multiple choice questions. They then helped each other to answer questions of a short Kahoot on the Russian Revolution. Vive la revolution!

The Reports of Sarah and Saleem - Jewish International Film Festival (JIFF)

Please join the KDSPA on Sunday 11 November at 6:15pm at The Classic Cinema for what will be a great JIFF movie. Sarah runs a café in West Jerusalem, while Saleem is a deliveryman from East Jerusalem. Despite disparate backgrounds, and the fact that they are both married, their deep attraction leads to an intense relationship. When a risky late-night tryst goes awry and threatens to expose them, the potential repercussions become all too clear, particularly as Sarah’s husband is a colonel in the Israeli army. The casual affair is material for a taut thriller in this exhilarating and accomplished film, as security agencies from both sides of the political divide become involved.
