Dear Community,

As the 2016 school year draws to a close it is an appropriate time to express our gratitude to each of our families for your support, commitment and unwavering care for our School and for one-another.

2016 has been a remarkable year that has seen growth in student numbers, new learning opportunities, wonderful new staff, and of course, the opening of some of our fabulous new learning resources.

This year also marks the bitter-sweet farewell to our beloved Southwick Campus on Kooyong Road. While we will be so sad to say goodbye and to close the gates for the last time on so many wonderful memories and experiences, we do so in the knowledge of the great promise of the inspiring opportunities that will be available at the Dandenong Rd Campus.

I take the opportunity to acknowledge our superb staff who have applied themselves with such incredible dedication to ensure that we improve in our teaching and learning, our provision of extra curricular opportunities an

Under the Sea with Gan Te'ena

Under the Sea with Gan Te'ena

Gan Te'ena had a wonderful End of Year Concert this week. The children have been practicing lots and managed to keep it a surprise for their families. The theme of our concert was 'Underwater Creatures', which stems from our very exciting visit to the Aquarium. Learning some great action songs in music class, and Hebrew lessons as well, the concert lineup came together quickly. It was great to see the theme expand as the children eagerly engaged in learning new songs. For the big event, the children designed and painted their own t-shirts which looked spectacular on the stage. What an amazing performance it was!

The Crazy Crayon Catastrophe

The Crazy Crayon Catastrophe

This week our Prep to Year 3 students performed at the iconic Astor Theatre in their musical - The Crazy Crayon Catastrophe.

The musical told the story of a young boy named Duncan who loved to colour. His crayons decided to write letters to him, explaining what they wanted him to change about his colouring in.

Each homeroom class performed both a song and dance, which they had rehearsed weekly during Term 4. Every student gave an energetic, vibrant and entertaining performance and smiled from ear to ear during the show! The performance was fabulously narrated by Year 8 student, Willow Ziguras.

Year 6 Careers Day

Year 6 Careers Day

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” - Confucius. Do what you love and make life your own. That was the main message of Careers Day. What's the difference between a job and a career? A job is something you do part time in order to make some money, and a career is something you do because you love the idea of waking up in the morning, happy to go and do what you are passionate about.

Getting Fit 2 Drive

Getting Fit 2 Drive

Our cohort was brought back down to reality again after our highly charged Year 11 camp, with a crucial message from F2D (Fit to Drive). The seminar allowed us to engage in interactive discussions led by knowledgeable facilitators, to learn about cautions we should take to become safe road users. We also had the pleasure of a charismatic policeman and fireman talk to us about the dangers of driving as young people on their Learner Plates or their P’s and looked at safe, alternate transport options to getting in the car with someone under the influence.

Overall, the F2D seminar was an informative and relatable experience that was tailored exactly to our current stance as road users. Speaking on behalf of the cohort, we took away many meaningful messages from F2D that will help guide our time as drivers and passengers, so we are kept safe and comfortable.

More than 60 students, parents and KDS staff were part of the King David team who participated in this year's Great Vic Bike Ride, cycling 527km from Halls Gap to Geelong. Despite the many physical challenges involved, they all crossed the finish line and we are extremely proud of their team spirit and efforts.

Hebrew Assembly - Focus on Birthdays and Friendship

Hebrew Assembly - Focus on Birthdays and Friendship

On Friday 25 November and 2 December the Junior School held its annual Hebrew assembly. Students from Prep to Year Three showcased their learning through singing, reading and dancing. This year the Preps and the Year Ones joined together and taught us all about the Aleph-Bet letters and reading. Morning routines and songs and the topics of Family and Kabbalat Shabbat demonstrated the growth in the student’s oral skills.

Students in Years 2 and 3 introduced the audience to the main characters in the program of ‘Chaverim B’Ivrit’ ("friends" in Hebrew). The topics of Birthday and Friendship were the focus of the assembly with students showing their Hebrew skills in small plays. It was incredible to see the level of Hebrew that all the students achieved.

The Journeys We Take

The Journeys We Take

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”
– Ursula K. Le Guin

These are poignant words as our Year 11s commenced their Headstart program that will see them embark on their final VCE year. While these students begin to turn their attention towards their November 2017 exams and the corresponding ATAR scores, it is pertinent to remind ourselves that the journey is just as important as the destination.

Nowhere was this observation more evident than on the Year 11 camp last week. Camp began with travelling to Sydney on the overnight train – an admittedly uncomfortable journey! Nevertheless, our students endured this part of the program with poise and a healthy respect for their fellow passengers.

Philosophy Classes Impress Singaporean Philosophy Educators

Philosophy Classes Impress Singaporean Philosophy Educators

Our School recently hosted 3 Educators from Huamin Primary School in Singapore. Jessi, Angela and Mumtaj joined a Year 6 Philosophy and Art session (Aesthetics) at the Magid Campus. They then continued their discoveries of the benefits of teaching Philosophy during a Year 3 Epistemology critical thinking session titled: ‘What is rubbish?’ The students led a deep discussion expanding their thinking skills and came to the conclusion that they had actually delved into the Logical, Ethical and Metaphysical aspects of Philosophy.

The final session with Year 1’s was based on Ethical Philosophical thinking through the stimulus of an Aesop’s Fable, The Lion and the Mouse.
