Insights - celebrating the past and supporting our future

Dear Community,

In the lead up to our 40th birthday Gala and Appeal, I hope that you have had the opportunity to view the beautiful videos being shared on the School’s social media accounts which emphasise the theme of celebrating the past and supporting our future.

What struck me in watching these videos, as it does when I speak with students, alumni and school families, is the unanimity in what resonates with so many about our incredible school.

Alumna, Alix Friedman, mentioned that “the word that comes to mind when I think of King David is ‘community’ and I felt that from the day that I arrived in Grade 2.” Likewise, parent and alumnus, Danny Gorog spoke of “the sense of community, the sense of warmth.”

The Crown - Edition IX

Please see attached, Edition 9 of The Crown magazine produced by a committee of Senior School students.

And they rest their case.

And they rest their case.

After three rounds of competition, our Years 7 and 8 debaters finished the season on a high this week with fantastic performances. The Year 7 team are to be congratulated for winning their debate against Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar. Although our Year 8 team lost to Sienna College, the margin of only one point stood testament to their excellent skills.

Jackson Carew and Charli Cantoni-Bud are both commended for being awarded Best Speaker. The topic the students tackled in this final round was that "violent toys and games should be banned for children". This had them arguing about everything from Nerf Guns to Fortnite. Well done to all competitors this season: Jackson Carew, Charli Cantoni-Bud, Alex Cowen, Charley Cowen, Jared Roff, Jackson, Maya Saxon-Kron, Lily Stein, Rose Stein and Tobi Taranto .

Maths in the real world!

Maths in the real world!

In Maths this term, the Year 2 students are looking at counting and ordering money and the different ways to make up amounts. We have been looking at lots of real world situations with money such as matching price tags to amounts, shopping games, piggy banks and working out change. Maths is fun in Year 2!

Serving the Hobart Jewish community

Serving the Hobart Jewish community

Over the recent High Holydays, Geoff Garber was invited to lead the services at the synagogue in Hobart. It is the oldest synagogue in Australia and is approaching its 170th anniversary.

Geoff has been there several times assisting the community as there has not been a Rabbi for many decades. A synagogue also exists in Launceston and at the last census, approximately 200 Jews live in Tasmania.

The Reports of Sarah and Saleem - Jewish International Film Festival (JIFF)

The Reports of Sarah and Saleem - Jewish International Film Festival (JIFF)

Please join the KDSPA on Sunday 11 November at 6:15pm at The Classic Cinema for what will be a great JIFF movie. Sarah runs a café in West Jerusalem, while Saleem is a deliveryman from East Jerusalem. Despite disparate backgrounds, and the fact that they are both married, their deep attraction leads to an intense relationship. When a risky late-night tryst goes awry and threatens to expose them, the potential repercussions become all too clear, particularly as Sarah’s husband is a colonel in the Israeli army. The casual affair is material for a taut thriller in this exhilarating and accomplished film, as security agencies from both sides of the political divide become involved.
