Kabbalat Siddur Joy

Kabbalat Siddur Joy

“...imrei fi v’hegyon libi…”

These words towards the end of the Amidah, perhaps encapsulate the essence of t’filah: “the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart”. This week our Year 3 students warmly welcomed their families to join in their t’filah and learning as they received their new “grown-up” siddurim. Please click here to see images from the morning. The students spoke about the meaning of each prayer and collaborated with their guests in creating idea boards in response to t’filah-related conversation prompts. Each student proudly grasped their precious new siddur; words of old, encased with their individualised covers and loving inscriptions. A combination of<

Insights: Questioning our tertiary admissions model

Dear Community,

Over the past weeks a debate has resurfaced regarding the merits of the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) as a measure of student attainment in the final years of schooling. Last week, a group of principals from both the independent and public systems wrote to the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) to outline their concerns regarding the failings of the current system.

The principals argued that the “bluntness” of the examination-based measures lacks the sophistication to holistically assess a student’s learning and capabilities and that, as such, “these arrangements no longer seem fit for purpose for many, perhaps most learners”.

The group has recommended that the relevant authorities adopt assessment measures which create a learner profile which can also acknowledge other characteristics such as “commu

Our artists in Senior Kinder

Our artists in Senior Kinder

Over the last week, each child in Gan Rimon drew a miniature self portrait. This is a wonderfully visual way of tracking their fine motor and creative development. Elena sat with each child individually and encouraged them to look at their features in the mirror, discussing what shapes they could see, How to draw different eye shapes, what lines they may need to use and draw the other side of their faces.  The results were amazing!

A child’s self portrait can reveal many things. As with any drawing, it shows the development of a child’s fine motor, observation and focusing skills, but it can also give insight into children’s self concept. Besides developing visual perception, the symmetry of the self-portrait, combining a photo with drawing, can contribute to valuing physical features, which are unique and makes us so special.

Creating Co-existence in Israel

Creating Co-existence in Israel

This week the Tzev Lev (Jewish Life) team hosted Amit Ben-Ami and Ahlam Kasem Ali as part of the Year 12 Ofek program. Amit is a leader of the Tzedek Centre movement while Ahlam is the CEO of Ajyal, Shared Society Partnership, which works to help establish Tzedek Centres in Arab-Jewish cities.  Tzedek Centres bring together Israeli Jews and Arabs to foster leadership and enact democratic values.

Amit, who has a Jewish background, and Ahlam, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, spoke to us about the important work of civil society in Israel in helping to break down barriers between Israeli Jews and Arabs.

Amit said that the work of Tzedek Centres is to help combat “learned political helplessness”. The Centres inspire hope and “fight exactly this feeling that nothing changes.” This feeling is combated through what Amit called ““A gradually growing experience of success.”

Building Robots - with thanks to ChatGPT

Building Robots - with thanks to ChatGPT

In the Year 10 Design and Technology class, students were tasked with creating robots using the VEX EXP robotics kits and programming them using the Python programming language. [Click here to see some images from the class] They were given a variety of materials to work with, including struts, nuts and bolts, motors and sensors, and were instructed to use their creativity and technical skills to build functioning robots. The students worked in groups, communicating and collaborating with each other as they wrote lines of code in Python to control the movements and actions of their robots.

The Arava comes to our Senior Kinder

The Arava comes to our Senior Kinder

Last year we introduced the ‘Twinning School Arava Program’ to our Senior Kinder children. This is a Program organised by the Jewish Agency and the Zionist Federation of Australia, and promotes relationships between Australia and Israel through cultural, social and educational programs.

‘Twinning School Arava’ is a mutually beneficial program which pairs together kindergartens from Australia with a matching class with an Arava Kindergarten. Last year we have been paired with a kindergarten located in Moshav Hatzeva.

A few activities we will share together are:

- Meeting together on Zoom

- Celebrating Chagim together

- Setting up an Arava provocation corner in our classrooms which will match a similar Australian corner set up in the Arava

KDS Flight 202 to Persia

In preparation for Purim, our Year 2 students had the opportunity of a lifetime, flying from The King David School to Shushan, Persia where the story of Megilat Esther takes place. Thankfully, each student remembered to bring their passport and boarding pass. Please click here to see images of the trip. Now that we have all arrived safely, we will begin our exploration of the Purim narrative through dramatic re-enactment!
