Insights - reflection and enhancement

Dear Community,

I have always been enamoured with time travel movies. Some of my all-time favourites explore the concept in different ways.

The Hollywood classic Back to the Future hinges on the ripple effects for the future created by trying to change the past. The cult classic Donnie Darko uses the framework of Donnie’s psychological introspection to create a tangent universe that resolves the problems in the world. Run Lola Run allows for the protagonist to relive the same experience over and again each time adjusting her behaviour until she finds a way to resolve seemingly intractable problems.

Throughout the current Hebrew month of Elul we begin every morning with our own Jewish approach to time travel. Across the School, the day starts with the ancient sounds of the shofar. This represents an awakening call alerting us that the time has come to take stock of the year that has passed and to begin the process of looking backwards in order to look forwards to how we ca

Silly Science enthralls

Silly Science enthralls

In three hilarious plays, Years 3 to 5 students enthralled a captive audience with a particularly quirky performance.

The Year 3s took us to Mars and back, bravely outsmarting the wicked Professor Meanfellow (and discovering that Martians love to share). The Year 4s had a very interesting take on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein - although I doubt that the original monster barked so sweetly and longed so desperately to make friends. The performance culminated in Year 5 hipsters saving the universe while dropping numerous pop culture references that kept the audience in stitches.

Credit to all involved for another great Junior School performance, with the King David thespian reputation safe for another year.

‘It Takes a Spark’

‘It Takes a Spark’

We left school at 7:15 in the morning to drive to Thomas Carr College to attend the ‘It Takes a Spark’ conference. When we arrived at Thomas Carr College we went into the auditorium and had Bonnie Cox talk to us about her career in mining and how it relates to STEAM. We then had Natasha from UBTech introduce the different robots that UBTech currently have. We then moved onto our first rotation. I was in the drone class. We designed a donnut delivery service via drone, we worked out that in five minutes (the amount of battery life we had) we could make the drone fly 480m. My next rotation was An Old Age Problem. I learnt about how to prevent elderly people from falling. My group came up with a shoe that when you start to fall it projects a cushion to soften the fall. we then had Dr Kudzai Kanhutu talk to us about her career and and how she got there. Dr Kadzai was a very inspiring speaker and encouraged us to try different things. We next had Andrew from Girls in STEAM Toolkit talk

A special day at school

A special day at school

This year in Hebrew, our Year 5 topic is special lessons students choose to take during school times or in the afternoons. For the last few weeks we have read a story about a cooking lesson that is being taught as part of a special day at school. In order to use our vocabulary knowledge, we decided to run a practical cooking lesson during our Hebrew class. Thank you to Hagit who came to teach us how to bake yummy cookies with a sweet surprise in the middle.

Double, Double, Toil and Trouble!

Double, Double, Toil and Trouble!

Year 10 students were treated to a live performance of 'Macbeth' this week courtesy of the Flying Bookworm Theatre Company. We have been studying the play in English this term and the incursion offered a valuable opportunity for students to consolidate their understanding of one of Shakespeare's darkest and most famous plays. Some students even volunteered to join the actors on stage. Simon Nathan-Valentine and Julian Adey did a magnificent job as the iconic, cackling witches, and Eve Bonan and Michael Schauder were compelling as Lady Macbeth's horrified castle attendants. Analysing 'Macbeth' represents the culmination of three year's study at King David, beginning with a unit on 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' in Year 8, and followed by 'Romeo and Juliet' in Year 9.

Year 12 Debaters make history at KDS!

Year 12 Debaters make history at KDS!

Mazal tov to our wonderful Year 12 A grade debaters who competed in this week’s DAV Octo-finals (one of 16 teams who made it to the finals from an original field of about 250 state teams!). They advanced on the finals journey further than any KDS debating team in recent history!

Despite our team being pipped at the post, by only one point, by the valiant team from Ballarat and Clarendon College, the Best Speaker spot was again awarded to Ella Freeman. Mazal tov and congratulations to Ella on an almost impeccable record in this regard!

Our very skilled team of Josh Brill, Avishai Conyer and Ella Freeman, with assistance and support in preparation from Ari Feldman, argued, with passion, logical reasoning and aplomb, the negative of the proposition ‘That the government should be responsible for the sale and production of all recreational drugs’.

Gan Keshet post their Rosh Hashanah cards to families

Gan Keshet post their Rosh Hashanah cards to families

This week Gan Keshet went on an excursion to post their Rosh Hashanah postcards and have a play at the nearby Alma Park. Before departing, we had a group discussion about the rules that would keep us safe on our walk to the park. We discussed how we need to wait until the pedestrian light turns green, look left and right to make sure there are no oncoming cars, and hold our friends/teachers hands before crossing the road.

Once we reached the postbox, the children waited patiently to post their postcards. Our Educator, Daniel, had to give each child a lift up to reach the post box as the letter hole was too high! We then continued on foot to Alma Park.
Our safety procedures were effective with every child wearing a fluorescent sash with Educators wearing a brightly coloured best for easy identification. After setting rules and boundaries, the children chose different equipment to play on, closely supervised by the staff. Some played with the swings and slides, others preferred cli

The sounds of the shofar

The sounds of the shofar

It is now half way through Elul, the month that precedes Rosh Hashana and the festivals of the month of Tishrei. During this month, we orientate ourselves inward and being the process of introspection that is the basis of teshuvah (repentance). To assist this, we sound the shofar every morning and harness its sounds to bring our spiritual sides to life. Across both the Junior and Senior campuses, students have been taking on this custom with a sense of significance and great lung capacity!

Gan Rimon visit The Art Factory

Gan Rimon visit The Art Factory

“This is so much fun” the children in Gan Rimon called out as they created penguins in sparkling water at The Art Factory.

Thank you to Emma and Amy for organising and generously giving their time for this wonderful creative opportunity.

On the wall at The Art Factory is a quote by Sark about how to be an artist. By incorporating art into our programs, we are ensuring that children do take an extra moment in their hectic days to mindfully imagine and create. Art also develops self-confidence, enhances fine motor skills, as well as executive functioning skills such as: thinking about thinking, thinking out side of the box and organisation skills.

Skilled Students - No Debate About It!

Skilled Students - No Debate About It!

Years 7 and 8 students have competed in their first round of debates as part of the Junior Secondary Program run by the Debaters' Association of Victoria. Students have been preparing all term with Lesley Wesseik and David Robinson, and had their first moment to shine on Monday night at St Catherine's School in Toorak. Proud teachers and students looked on as they tackled the topic: 'that we should value literature more than science'. Year 8 students Zaro Rockman , Max Klein and Jaref Roff defeated Loreto Mandeville Hall, with Max being awarded Best Speaker. Year 7 students Sammy Katz, Michelle Aghion and Bella Korolik missed out on victory by one point, but demonstrated some fantastic skills. We look forward to next week when students will be called on to demonstrate that Victoria should restrict the drivers' licenses of senior citizens.

Big Scientist/Little Scientist – Call to the Wild Melbourne Zoo Excursion

Big Scientist/Little Scientist – Call to the Wild Melbourne Zoo Excursion

Year 1s spent the day at Melbourne Zoo buddied up with some Years 7/8 Science students in a multi-age age learning venture. Students had the opportunity to observe animals in their specific habitats and used their senses to observe and investigate the features (adaptations) of living things. Throughout the day, all students enjoyed a zoo led educational session and explicit animal investigations. Thank you to the Big Scientist mentors: Kayla Bass, Charlie Cantoni-Bud, Naomi Irons, Sammy Katz, Noah Lentin, Ariella Lyons, Daniel Menashe, Boaz Rockman, Dylan Umansky and Shelley Wajsbrem.

Also a big thank you to the Year 1 teachers Cassie and Rebecca and the fabulous parents who attended. Year 1 student Eli stood out as a biologist in the making. He did a show and tell presentation describing the difference between a herbivore, omnivore and carnivore.

Representation at the United Nations!

Representation at the United Nations!

Several pairs of Years 11 and 12 students have embarked on a journey of political discovery over August and September, participating in the annual UN Youth Victoria Evatt Model United Nations competition. Representing one of the fifteen UN member countries of the Security Council, they have debated, amended and voted on resolutions concerning global issues such as xenophobia, Nigerian elections and deforestation.

At various half day sessions over several weeks, each pair was allocated a country to represent in the round table discussions with fourteen other pairs from a wide variety of Victorian schools. They were given two issues on which to prepare and then had to discuss another topic, unprepared, on the day. Jordy Rogelberg and Pure Hayman were advocates for Belgium, Josh Brill and Cal Segeal for Germany, Jonah Epstein and Maximus Sandler, as well as Ethan Mileikowski and Jasmine Bader at another session, for China and Avishai Conyer and Aaron Greenwell for the USA. All prepared

Biology outside the Science Laboratory!

Biology outside the Science Laboratory!

VCE Biology students travelled to Melbourne Zoo last Friday to undertake some challenging field investigation work. Binoculars were an important accessory to observe some of the traits of animals. The Year 12 students explored the primate section of the Zoo. They conducted a professional study that was valid and reliable to infer evolutionary trends. The Year 11 class explored the entire eight areas of the Zoo with the objective of compiling photos and notes about reproductive adaptations and parental behaviour. Justin King won the scavenger hunt challenge.

Youth in Philanthropy program

Youth in Philanthropy program

Max Sandler (Year 11) gave a speech at the Presentation Night of Building Bridges held recently. It summed up much of what the programme was about. He pointed out that students had an opportunity to meet students from other schools, cultures and religions. Barriers were broken down and friendships formed. This was a wonderful opportunity for all of the participants.

Max felt that all had learned much from and about each other and hopefully these friendships would continue. Some graduates of the programme who are now at university also spoke to the audience. They continue to be involved in the programme as they believe it is a very important initiative for Australian students.

Jasper Harris - aerial gymnastics on the slopes!

Jasper Harris - aerial gymnastics on the slopes!

Jasper Harris (Year 11) qualified to compete in a national skiing competition recently. He suffered a fall in his first run but came back in the second run perfecting a 360 degree spin with a kosak on the first jump and a 540 spin on the second jump and landed perfectly. He placed 11th overall which is highly impressive!
