Insights - a strong sense of identity

Insights - a strong sense of identity

Dear Community,

The founders of The King David School carefully devised a school emblem of King David’s harp sitting in a bed of wattle. This was designed to attest to the importance of our striving to nurture a strong Jewish identity and connection with Israel and an abiding allegiance to Australia.

While developing pride in being Australian seems second nature to our students, our school has a responsibility to reinforce this by highlighting Australia’s significant events and achievements. For this reason we have decided to add a Canberra trip for our Year 6 students next year to allow them to deepen their understanding of Australia’s history and democratic institutions. This, together with our Year 8 Jabiru trip to explore Australia’s First Nations’ culture and history, forms part of the holistic educational experience that our students truly gain from.

Over the last month, our students have also benefited from the presence of Israeli Madrichim (leaders) who have

Sadly due to a fractured wrist Juliet Wajsbrem (Year 5) was unable to compete in her throwing events. Joel Krause (Year 4) tried his best in the 9/10 year old high jump as he took on some giants but it was Emily Abukasis (Year 6) who made it through to the Regional Finals placing 2nd in her high jump event jumping a personal best.

Philosophy in Numbers

Philosophy in Numbers

This week our Prep Philosophers were asked to count a collection of chocolate chip cookies. They displayed their mathematical thinking by calculating the amount of cookies from the given collection in a variety of different ways.

They were then asked what the fairest way to share the cookies would be.

• “Sam should get the most amount of cookies because she is bigger.” - Zack
• “Sam should get the most amount of cookies because she is a grown up.” – Poppy
• “Everyone should have an even amount of cookies because that is fair” - Amiel
• “Whoever brought the cookies in should have the largest amount. ” - Nathan

AFL 9’s Jewish Schools Cup

AFL 9’s Jewish Schools Cup

Today was a great day filled with fun, good sportsmanship and most importantly footy. Ten girls from Yr 6 went to the former training base of St Kilda Football Club and played five other Jewish School teams. We won 3 out of our 5 games and all had a lot of fun. At the end we got a visit from some AFLW players and they gave us some awesome merchandise to remind us of this great day.

For the boys we were doing very well, we had a great spirit and plan. Some games we were very close to winning but often couldn’t play out the second half. Even then we played well. We never gave up and when we fell over we helped each other out. We always worked together as a team.

Year 11 VCE Music students at Melbourne University

This week three students from the Year 11 VCE Music class performed in a masterclass at the University of Melbourne. They received demonstration lessons from a brilliant educator, Melinda Ceresoli, who also happens to be the author of their textbook. The three students Camilla Burrows, Skyla Howard and Amira Susskind performed a demanding repertoire with a great deal of finesse and expressiveness. The students then participated in a panel discussion with Melinda and answered questions from my students currently undertaking a Masters of Music in performance teaching.

Great experience on snow camp!

Great experience on snow camp!

We have just returned from four stunning days at Falls Creek with 24 students. With the aim of the camp to improve snow skills and increase inter year level bonding, the students from Years 7-10 had lessons from instructors each morning before consolidating those skills with staff. Having three first timers seeing the snow for the first time to several experienced students, students learnt also from each other. Snow skills such as learning the hockey stop to knowing how to call ski patrol were all practiced and implemented during the camp.

We all stayed in one lodge and had amazing weather for the four days with sunny skies and minimal wind, something our first timers will need to learn is not normal conditions at the snow.
Many thanks to the staff who kept the students safe, well fed and entertained.

Enrichment Geo-Inquiry

Enrichment Geo-Inquiry

During Enrichment sessions this term, Years 4 & 5 students are exploring the geographical concepts of place, management of space, and inter-relationships between people and the environment. Through an inquiry approach we are striving to become thoughtful and active local, national and global citizens.

Students are researching a location in the City of Stonnington that has undergone change, with a popular choice being the Glen Iris Wetlands. Students identified a need to visit the site in order to sufficiently answer their ‘driving question’. Yesterday, students met with Trevor Phillips, President of Friends of Gardiner’s Creek Valley for a tour of the area. Trevor shared his wealth of knowledge of the local flora and fauna, history of the area and the masterplan.

The Great Debate

The Great Debate

On Monday this week, some students involved in debating at the School (some debating students couldn't attend because of prior commitments) had the great pleasure of going to watch ‘The Great Debate’, which was held at the State Library of Victoria. The Great Debate is an exhibition debate held every year during the Melbourne Writers Festival. In keeping with this year’s theme of “When we talk about Love”, the topic of the debate was “That we regret the depiction of love in reality television”.

The debaters who performed for us were hand-picked from the top tiers of Australian high-school debaters; some had even had the opportunity to compete in national competitions! The debate itself was interesting and the points brought up by both sides, insightful. The quality of the debaters really came through. Unfortunately though, at points, the debate was kept at quite a surface-level and ideas were not expanded on, instead being quickly dismissed. Interesting points for and

The Year 8 girls basketball team won another championship with a massive 60-9 win against Nunawading.
