Solidarity with Israel

Solidarity with Israel

Dear community,

In light of the escalation of the security situation in Israel and the region, our thoughts are with our family and friends in Israel. Today we conducted a moving solidarity assembly with students and staff members in which we said prayers for the people of Israel and sang Oseh Shalom. I am sure that the whole community join me in wishing for peace and security in Israel. Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh Bazeh.

I am aware that many of us have very close connections with loved ones in Israel, I wish you all strength and support.

Parashat HaShavua: Beha’alotcha

Parashat HaShavua: Beha’alotcha

Candle-lighting 4.49pm | Havdalah 5.51pm

Political leaders today are not always modest, to say the least. Our parasha speaks of Moshe (Moses) as “very anav, more so than any other human being on earth” (Numbers 12:3).

But what does it mean to be anav? Rashi teaches us that it means to be both humble and patient. Humility is reacting in a measured and deliberate manner, even in the face of stress and pressure of daily life (even in the middle of the desert!).

Ibn Ezra tells us that Moshe was meek, at peace, and did not seek honour over his brother Aharon (nor sister Miriam). Imagine growing up as a prince of Egypt, working as God’s emissary, and then leading more than two million people for forty years, yet still keeping your own ego in check!

Ramban explains that even when his siblings spoke against him, Moshe restrained himself, even in the face of their provocation. We know how easy it is to get angry, to lose our cool, and even to lash out when we find ourselves faced with criticism. Moshe manages not to fall into this trap even when his own family members attack him publicly.

During this Shabbat and beyond may we all be blessed to follow in Moshe’s footsteps and embrace the humility which he demonstrated in the Biblical narrative.

Shabbat shalom!

Insights: Modelling respectful disagreement

Insights: Modelling respectful disagreement

Dear Community,

This week our Year 9 students were presented with a wonderful opportunity to hear from a broad panel of politicians from across the political spectrum. They learnt from the panellists’ insights but also from their capacity to model collegiality and respect despite their differing worldviews.

Within the Year 9 Nitzan program, our students are empowered to participate in experiential learning each Wednesday. On Nitzan days, the students develop their skills in a range of engaging activities. They enjoy Kickstarter mornings which activates the body in fitness or mindfulness before they enjoy a communal breakfast prepared by their classmates.

They learn a range of “life hacks” that they may not encounter across the rest of their schooling. Skills such as repairing a flat tyre, unblocking a toilet, sewing on a button or making a barista-class coffee help them to feel like capable contributors to their homes.

They develop independence through their exploration of parts of Melbourne that they will not have experienced before. They volunteer for worthwhile organisations, contributing meaningfully to their community.

This term, the Nitzan focus is Artivism. Our students are learning about important causes and are being challenged to respond creatively in a way that aligns with their passions. As part of this experience, they were privileged to meet with the panel of politicians so that they could understand what drove them to serve their communities and what the causes are that they are most passionate about.

They heard how

Leadership and adventure on Year 10 Camp

Leadership and adventure on Year 10 Camp

Year 10 camp is off to a flying start out in Emerald. Students have been participating in a range of activities and workshops to examine the concept of leadership since they arrived last night. Staff have been very impressed with their maturity and engagement. This morning offered adventure activities with students choosing between mountain bike riding or canoeing to explore the local area. Tonight and tomorrow they will enjoy a special Shabbat together as a year level. We are predicting they will sleep well when they return home tomorrow night!

All aboard the Enterprize

All aboard the Enterprize

On their recent excursion, Year 4 students embarked on an exciting journey aboard the Enterprize tall ship, a 27-metre topsail schooner. The ship is a replica of the vessel originally built in Hobart in 1830 and first sailed to the Yarra River in Melbourne in 1835. During their visit, the children experienced life as a sailor, actively helping to hoist the sails and ringing the ship's bell. Please click here to see photos from the excursion.

The students also had the chance to explore the ship's quarters, peering into the compact bunks and inspecting the galley, gaining a firsthand understanding of what life was like on a tall ship in the 1830s. The excursion was a great opportunity for our students to learn more about Australia’s maritime history and the experiences of these explorers and the impact it had on our First Nations Peoples. Click below to see some student reflections of the day.

Engaging with our politicians

Engaging with our politicians

Year 9 students heard from a wonderful panel of current politicians this week, offering our students a unique opportunity to engage with leaders shaping our community and nation. Hosted by Year 10 Co-ordinator Asher Myerson, the panel included Josh Burns, Federal Labour member for Macnamara, Dr Monique Ryan, Federal Independent member for Kooyong, David Southwick, State Liberal member for Caulfield and Rachel Westaway, State Liberal member for Prahran.

The discussion included rising antisemitism in Australia, climate change and safety in our community.

In Marc Light's vote of thanks, he praised each of the panel for being exceptional role models. He mentioned that while representing diverse political views, they are all striving to make their communities and Australia, a better place for all of us.

A spirited VCE Trivia Night

A spirited VCE Trivia Night

On Thursday night, the Ruach Va’adat (School Spirit Committee) organised and ran a VCE Trivia Night for Year 11 & 12. It was a huge success, with more than 55 people attending, and even a teacher team competing. The night featured classic trivia rounds such as: General Knowledge; Geography; Pop Culture and Sports; as well as a King David-themed round, and some fun games in between. In the end, only one team could win – The Periodic Table Dancers, who took home a box of Favourites as a prize.

Huge thanks to everyone who came to the event!

Gan Tamar take risks and show persistence at Bush Kinder

Gan Tamar take risks and show persistence at Bush Kinder

On Thursday morning, Gan Tamar was full of energy and excitement as we returned to Gan Teva (Bush/Grass Kinder) after the long weekend. The bus ride to Elsternwick Nature Reserve was lively, filled with chatter and anticipation for the day ahead.

Eager to explore a new area of the reserve, we began with morning tea before diving straight into play. One of the first things the children noticed was that the stream bank had dried up. Their curiosity sparked thoughtful observations:

Zeke: "Maybe the sun dried it up."

Tyler: "Maybe it’s because it didn’t rain."

As this was our fourth visit, the children were confident and familiar with the rules and expectations. They demonstrated a strong sense of place, recalling features from previous visits while also noticing changes in their environment.

Millie: "This hole wasn’t there before."

This week, many children challenged themselves in new ways, taking increasing risks and showing great persistence. They

Leo Gelfand speaks at book launch

Leo Gelfand speaks at book launch

Last night Year 11 student Leo Gelfand spoke at the launch of The Ferryman, a book about his grandfather, Ephraim Finch. Leo writes:

When I chose ‘family’ as my topic to create a short TED talk for English, for the unit of work on ‘Personal Journeys’ I did not envision myself speaking in front of 500 people for my grandfather, Ephraim Finch’s, much anticipated book launch, The Ferryman: The Life and Deathwork of Ephraim Finch by Katia Ariel. But indeed, this is where I did find myself on Thursday night, 12 June, at the Glen Eira Town Hall, speaking about my grandfather - not only as someone who cared deeply for the souls of thousands of individuals in our community, but as my Zaidy - someone who inspires me every day, to listen, to be present, to share stories and to show love and care. I was scheduled to speak after renowned writer Arnold Zable, which is no easy feat, but my grandfather’s appreciation for my words was made clear to me, when I saw how deeply touched he was to hear me speak at his momentous book launch. I feel honoured and proud to have had the opportunity to speak last night, and that my grandfather’s story is now here, for us to read and treasure. [Photo by Pinni Biber]

Inspiring Professional Performances

Inspiring Professional Performances

Over the past few weeks, our Drama and Theatre Studies students have had the opportunity to experience a rich selection of live theatre, which they will be analysing as part of their studies in the subject. Our VCE Theatre Studies students attended Malthouse Theatre’s compelling production of ‘The Birds’ on May 29 and June 5. This adaptation challenged students with its abstract storytelling and thought-provoking themes. This experience will directly support their analysis and performance interpretation assessments this term.

On May 29, our Year 10 Drama students saw ‘The Black Woman of Gippsland’, a vital new Australian work presented at the Sumner Theatre. The performance

Philosophy for Life

Philosophy for Life

One of the enriching learning opportunities we offer at KDS is the Philosophy for Children (P4C) program.

This program nurtures critical, creative, and collaborative thinking, while also promoting intellectual flexibility, open-mindedness, and a willingness to explore ideas from multiple perspectives. Through philosophical dialogue, students build essential social and teamwork skills in a respectful and thoughtful environment. Each session takes place in a Community of Inquiry, beginning with a thought-provoking stimulus. Students learn to articulate their ideas, listen actively, and engage in respectful disagreement—all while honing their reasoning and communication abilities.

Following on from the Philosophy for Children (P4C) program at the Junior School, our Year 6–8 students are confident participants in this process. They demonstrate their capacity to reason, challenge ideas with counter-examples, and explore complex concepts such as ownership, truth, time, beauty, and love.

This thoughtful and reflective practice is a distinctive part of our school culture and identity. Ultimately, P4C fosters confident, thoughtful, and reflective individuals who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to their communities and to approach life with a sense of wonder, inquiry, and integrity.

KDS taking part in the World's Greatest Shave

KDS taking part in the World's Greatest Shave

If you don't know what it is, the World's Greatest Shave is an amazing charity that supports those affected by leukaemia, by having people volunteer to get their hair cut or shaved in order to fundraise donations. The group has a real, tangible impact on the lives of people across Australia, and many schools and other organisations get involved every year. It is a super exciting opportunity that we are privileged to have, and will be the first time that King David facilitates the event (we hope it will be run again in the future!).

Students (and staff!) across King David have volunteered to take part in the event, on Tuesday 1 July at lunchtime, on the oval at the back of the Magid Campus mansion to bravely get their hair either fully shaved or cut by a hairdresser in front of most of the school. We ask family and friends to choose to support these volunteers by giving a donation that will go towards the charity.

Please donate to the KDS team page here!

We look forward to seeing everyone take part!

Thank you, The Tikkun Olam Va'adat 2025

Annual Wellbeing Conference

Annual Wellbeing Conference

On Tuesday, teachers took time out of their busy schedules to pause, reflect and connect at our annual Wellbeing Conference. After starting the morning with a brisk Tai Chi session in the crisp winter air, we were ready for a day of learning about teacher wellbeing with renowned ‘keep-it-real’ educator, Danielle Falecki. She reminded us that teaching is a heart vocation, that wellbeing is a necessity rather than a luxury, and then showed us how to enhance our energy and a culture of feeling valued at work, in practical and meaningful ways. It was a wonderful day to share together.

Your chance to own this vibrant painting by Debra Olenski - Online Art Auction

In the wake of the devastating events of October 7th, 2023, the world witnessed unimaginable pain and loss. Yet, amidst the darkness, the human spirit's resilience shone through, a testament to our enduring hope and the promise of renewal.
The King David School is honoured to present an extraordinary opportunity to acquire an original artwork, We Shall Dance, by the talented artist Debra Olenski (detail shown in the image above). This poignant piece serves as a powerful reminder of the Nova festival and the indomitable spirit of those who were there, a symbolic declaration that joy and celebration will ultimately prevail.
Debra Olenski, deeply moved by the events, has generously donated this artwork to our school. We Shall Dance captures the essence of hope, resilience, and the unwavering belief in a brighter future. Its vibrant colours and evocative imagery resonate with the strength and unity that emerged from tragedy.
This is a unique opportunity to own a meaningful piece of art while making a tangible difference in the lives of our students.
