Insights - Outdoor Education - Valuable Life Lessons Learned

Dear Community,

Benjamin Franklin famously articulated the relevance of student-centred learning approaches when he stated: “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Franklin’s advocacy for experiential learning opportunities explains the reason behind our School’s focus on provision of meaningful learning opportunities that extend well beyond traditional classroom learning.

Recently I joined some highly excited Year 6 students as they boarded the bus for their Camp which was held in Sorrento. This was the first camp amongst our extraordinarily enriching outdoor education program that aims to provide our students with a range of life skills, challenges and memorable experiences that helps them develop as individuals and tightens their bonds as a cohort.

From gentle beginnings with a practice sleep-over for Yr 3 ahead of their first overnight camp, our program provides opportunities to explore nature in different parts of Victoria, in

Generous and Victorious Debaters

Generous and Victorious Debaters

Round 1 of this year’s DAV interschool debates ‘kicked off’ on Wednesday evening. There were actually several footy analogies used in the A Grade debate, all of the 4 KDS teams ‘kicked goals’ and 3 of them won the points! There was a very enthusiastic buzz at the venue for our region, and our students contributed to that on the night, as well as having prepared with gusto and dedication over the weeks beforehand.

A special mention should be awarded to some generous participants. Avishai Conyer agreed to debate in both the B Grade and A Grade debates and Henry Wise helped out in the D Grade debate by delivering two of the three speeches. Well done! Also, a big congratulations to three Best Speakers: Hugo Burstin, Ella Freeman and Joshua Mitelman (equalling with Ethan Mileikowski but only one student can actually be recorded officially as Best Speaker).

Expressing Genotypes with Veggie People

Expressing Genotypes with Veggie People

Yr 10 students have been investigating genetics in Science this term. Recently they had a chance to demonstrate their understanding through the creation of 'Veggie People' who had different characteristics depending on the genes they inherited from Ma Potato and Pa Onion. The population grew and we witnessed different ratios of certain characteristics such as carrot feet and olive eyes. Everyone had fun building their own individuals - or as we say in genetics "expressing their genotypes" and reflected that this activity really helped put some of the theory into action.

Year 5 Leadership Induction Assembly

Year 5 Leadership Induction Assembly

Year 5 students had their Leadership Induction Assembly recently which made all students the Official Leaders of the Junior Campus 2018!

Each student received a special certificate and a badge with a ribbon which represents one of the eight committees. Parents and students of Years 3 & 4 were invited to join this significant event. Each committee said a few words about what they are planning to do in the year ahead and some groups decided to explain their CSI (Colour-Symbol-Image). Each group’s CSI is displayed outside the Philosophy room. At the end of the assembly all of the Year 5 students read The King David School Leaders' Oath:
"As a leader, I will uphold the moral guidelines and expectations valued so highly by all at King David. I will respect the values and personal dignity of others at all times, acting with integrity and maintaining pride in all aspects of conduct. I acknowledge my responsibilities and will fulfil them to the best of my capabilities in order to kn

Great Excitement in Prep!

Prep students reached a milestone recently when they took their first reading books home. These young readers will hopefully enjoy a lifelong love of books.

Our Prep teachers, Renay and Samantha together with David Opat presented to Prep families earlier this year on strategies to develop reading skills in young children.

The KDSPA and TBI have set up a group blood drive in honour of Rabbi Gersh Lazarow who has recently been diagnosed with Leukaemia. Whilst the blood donated will not specifically go to Gersh we believe this is a meaningful way to show our support for Gersh and his family and at the same provide much needed blood for others in the community. Information about donating blood can be found at www.donateblood.com.au. Please follow the steps below to make an appointment to donate blood at one of our group sessions or any other time that suits you.
