Shadows and Science in Early Learning

Shadows and Science in Early Learning

In Gan Gefen last week, the children explored the concept of shadows. They observed Ziggy outside spinning her dress around and watching her shadow follow her.

During their mat session, they discussed shadows:
• Ben-A shadow is what you see in the dark.
• Orly- My shadow follows me everywhere. Everywhere I go, he goes!
• Zac- I have shadows in my room. They are blue and scary.
• Daniel- It has to follow you.
• Noah- If you get out of bed, your shadow gets out of bed too.
• Mia- When we look in the mirror.
• Romi- When it’s sunny outside, I can see a shadow
• Ziggy- It’s dark and it follows you.
• Esther- When you are outside walking. But sometimes I leave my shadow at home with my mummy.
• Liora- There are shadows on my bed.

After explaining to the children what a shadow was, we decided to play and have some fun with shadows. We used our imagination to made shadows with our hands and feet. We played shadow tag where the children had to chase each other outside and jump on each other’s shadow. We also drew around the animal’s shadow which was great for their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.

We read a book about shadows called My Shadow by Robert Stevenson and watched a few videos about shadows. This was a great opportunity to enhance children's engagement in STEM learning and develop their critical thinking skills.
